Anna Lucia Massaro Obituary
We are very sad to announce that on August 27th 2025 Prof. Anna Lucia Massaro has passed away. Prof. Massaro has been a relevant professional figure, illustrating Transfusion Science. She has been the first (and to date the only) woman to be elected as President of the Italian Society of Transfusion Medicine – SIMTI. She was for more than 30 years Director of Torino Blood Establishment, one of the biggest in Italy. She has been among the founding members of the European School of Transfusion Medicine – ESTM, in 1992, (together with the founder and first President, Prof. Umberto Rossi). At the ESTM she served as vice-president from 1992 to 2014 and then as honorary vice-president, until the death. She has been very active in organizing and co-organizing many ESTM courses, in Italy and in Europe. Her strong and passionate engagement in the promotion of voluntary and non remunerated blood donation is well emphasized by the title of her presentation, during the ESTM course in Milan (2015): “General aspects of donation as an implicit proactive contribution to a better society”. We remember prof. Massaro as a wonderful woman, an example of great humanity and sensitivity, of deep scientific preparation, capable of providing teaching and affection to everyone. We will miss her.
